Oracle is snapping up companies left and right lately: this year the company not only closed the acquisition of Sun Microsystems, but also purchased smaller players like Silver Creek Systems, AmberPoint and now, Convergin.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of this year, and financial details were not disclosed. After the close of the transaction, Convergin employees and management are “expected to join Oracle”.

Convergin essentially provides real-time service brokering solutions, enabling communications service providers (CSPs) in setting up service delivery platforms and converged charging solutions that include including (e.g. pre-paid charging for carriers) across their various underlying networks.

Convergin’s J2EE-based Service Broker and network integration software product has been adopted by customers such as T-Mobile, SaskTel, TeliaSonera and others.

Here’s how Oracle pitches the acquisition:

CSPs are increasingly looking to transition from inflexible and costly intelligent network platforms to deliver value-added services. The combination of Oracle and Convergin is expected to provide a single carrier-grade, standards-based IT platform allowing CSPs to effectively evolve their service delivery capabilities at a lower total cost of ownership.

Convergin products complement Oracle Communications’ integrated product suite, including Oracle Communications Billing and Revenue Management, Oracle Communications Converged Application Server and Oracle Communications service fulfillment applications.
